Are you sick of those stupid commercials late at night? I'm not talking about the chat line ones either, because those hawt women just need someone to talk to, and we shouldn't judge them for any reason! I am talking about the ads for ringtones or screensavers, or even the joke of the day service that will send a text of surely a hilarious joke to your cell daily.
Well when I had my last phone, I had to download ringers to get them, I was an avid user of a website called 3gupload.com, then they changed from a one time donation, to a monthly fee, and they lost me. Pretty rude for people who had been using their site for years to try and force them to start paying every month. Anyway, my current phone being what it is, there aren't allot of options for ringers, or things of that nature. This is good and bad. The good is, say goodbye to paying 3 bucks for a 30 sec clip of a song that sometimes comes through in bad quality, which my phone is on vibrate about 80% of the day anyway. The bad is if you are not that savvy with computers and technology, you might be stuck with the default ringers. This post hopefully will change that.
So I will keep this simple. If we wanted to, I could show you how to find a video clip on Youtube, download it as a mpeg file, convert it to an mp3, then clip out the section you want, but that's another day. Let's just concentrate on one thing at a time.
First off, find a song you want as a ringer. Think of TV theme songs, or songs you won't be embarresed about at the checkout line in the grocery store and that hawt brunette behind you in line hears your phone playing Julio Iglesias 'Escape'. No way to play that off as cool, seriously, there isn't don't even try.
Now that we have a song, where is it? Is it on a cd, or on your computer? Let's say it is on a cd, so we start all the way at the beginning.
For this entire process (I am sure there are other ways, but this is mine) you will need to download a few free programs. What are they you ask, and where do I find them?
CD EXMP3 Direct CutThese are both
FREE !! I have been using CDex for quite some time now, as a CD ripper, and it's a great app.
Ok, so download and install those, if you need help with that, ummmm, go ahead and skip today's blog, and come back tomorrow. Once those are setup, make sure you go through the options of each, to designate where files are ripped to, or saved, and all that install stuff.
So, first we need to "rip" the song you want off your cd, into an mp3 format. Make sure CDex is open on your PC, and throw in that cd of the soundtrack to 'Paint Your Wagon' (actually a great cd) CDex will pop all the tracks into it's window. Now click on the song you want, rename it (if needed) and choose what should be the second choice down the right side of CDex. When you hover your mouse over, you should see the text "Extract CD to Compressed Audio File".
Remember, you need to setup CDex properly, so you know where the new mp3 will end up.
Ok, click the button, and wait for the process to finish, and now you have an mp3.
Second step...
Open up MP3 Direct Cut.
Here is what MP3 Direct Cut looks like, you can drag and drop your new mp3 into this window.
Now, click the 'Set Begin' button and you will see a dotted yellow line rolling along as the song plays. Simply click that line for your start point, and then click the 'Set End' button to stop.
Finally, choose File>Save Selection. Try and change the name to distinguish this new clip from the original, and you are done. Remember most ringers are only about 30 secs long, so choose carefully what you cut.
Now, with my phone, all I need to do is transfer it over to a folder, and turn it into a ringer. Please note, this is for the PPC-6700 phone. I am not sure how to do this with other models, but I might be able to figure it out if I had to.
